Many state governments have adopted the lottery in an attempt to boost their general revenue. In the immediate post-World War II period, it was seen as a way to increase the services that state government could offer without significantly increasing the burden of taxes on the working class and middle classes.<\/p>\n
But there are several problems with this argument, not least of all that the lottery is a form of taxation. When a lottery winner wins, they must pay federal income tax on the winnings, which is currently 24 percent. And this is on top of any other state and local taxes. This can leave winners with only half of what they won.
