Last week The Husband and I were invited into school to sample the school dinners on offer at the 5 year old’s school.
The 5 year old was beyond excited at the prospect of actually sitting with Mummy and Daddy in the school hall. A little too excited. The invite went out over a month ago and during those five weeks the 5 year old’s excitement didn’t abate.
I am a big believer in school dinners. The 5 year old has always been a good eater and I’d rather she had something different every day rather than my lunchbox offerings.
I’m a bad pack- luncher-maker. The 4 year old who goes to morning nursery takes a packed lunch which he eats at the OAP Childminders.
I’m totally uninspired when it comes to packed lunches although I try to rotate my lack of inspiration. Rotating cucumber slices for carrot sticks and on occasion sticking in a box of raisins … wooohooo.
When we went into school last week we had roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and gravy.
I watched as the children came in and made their own choices and then decided where to sit. They all seemed so grown up and independent … which I suppose they are! It was a lovely insight into what the 5 year old gets up to during her school day.
Beforehand I’d had thoughts of slop and chips. But I was pleasantly surprised. The vegetables actually had a bit of bite to them, not the expected mush. The chocolate pudding and chocolate custard were just like when I was at school, but then I always liked school puddings … I’ve never been able to find a decent jam and cornflake pudding or pink custard since leaving primary school.
I’m looking forward to September when the 4 year old starts reception and has school dinners. We’ll be invited in again to sample the offerings.
I hope it’s a chocolate pudding day again.

Oh, I want chocolate pudding with chocolate custard. I loved school dinners, and my best friend’s mum was one of the serving ladies so she would give us extra. Mmmmm.
I get to eat scrummy school dinners every day – our school’s homemade soups are to die for! It’s changed a lot since I was a pupil.
No photos, I can’t believe englishmum hasn’t started complaining yet…
Pictures next time, ok.
Oh my! I had COMPLETELY forgotten about pink custard!! I used to like semolina with a dollop of jam – and the dinner ladies would shout at us for stirring the jam into the semolina so it turned pink!
Isn’t it slop and chips for the other 4 days?!! School dinners have certainly improved; roast beef and yorkshires, blimey.
CJ xx
I don’t miss pink custard but loved sponge puddings. Discovered our local hospital serves school dinner food which was a bit of a silver lining!
I wish we had hot lunches here. The best we get is pizza day once a week. I am not very creative with the packed luches. Fortunately, Boy is content with bologna sandwiches everyday. Yuck, but at least he eats it
My BIL called me up and said can you please tell your sister how to make jam and cornflake cake because I really fancy it…
So I did. Its a staple in their house!
I loved school dinners!
All those roast dinners, proper chips, summer salads.
And the puddings? Oh my giddy Aunt!
Manchester tart, chocolate blancmange, marble sponge and chocolate or pink custard, ginger Sponge, treacle tart.
I’m blumming starving now!
I miss pink custard. I have to say I am very impressed with Maxi’s school dinners and very often or not there isnt chips on the menu. He eats very well at school and I have been told by his teacher that he polishes most things off.
He doesnt have a sweet tooth, but loves when there are cheese, crakers and grapes for afters.
I was not concerned about school when he started in September, but I was so concerned about dinners, about how he would carry it all, make an informed choice and use his knife and fork.
It is wonderful and I am ever grateful for him being an eater
I hated school dinners but they seem so much nicer these days. Unfortately, my daughter refuses to try them and so takes in a very unexciting packed lunch each day and comes home starving. Good luck in September!
Well, we just don’t get these kind of “hot dinners” at school in Australia. As good as it gets is a hot pie or soup or toasted sandwich at a canteen (if your school has one – my boys’ school doesn’t).
I tell you what though, if the kids *did* get hot lunches, I would be very tempted to do sandwiches for dinner every night. That was the best thing when my two eldest boys were both at daycare. They’d have a two course meal for lunch (say, pasta then yoghurt & fruit for dessert), so I’d just do toasted cheese on toast for dinner!
YAY!
I’m with you. They’re so much better at primary school, though. My two seem to exist on a diet of panninis and ‘pasta king’ whatever the hell that is.
I LOVE pink custard!
