The 4 year old needs to be exercised, like a dog. I am forever trying to think of ways to help him release energy. Now the nights are getting lighter we can start going round the block every night with the scooter and let him trampoline till his heart’s content.
I was in the village sandwich shop the other week when I saw a sign for football for 3-6 year old’s. I rang The Husband in excitement and we booked his first session immediately.
Realising that his trainers were too small and his school shoes too, well … non-trainery we went shopping.
On the way to the shopping sheds (as TFMo3 likes to call them) The Husband told me in no uncertain terms that he would be in charge of football gear purchasing.
To be fair he has waited a long time for one of his children to show an interest in sport. He’s been patient; The Teenager is interested in horse riding and the 5 year old is interested in reading and drawing. Luckily the 4 year old is interested in anything which involves hitting a ball, kicking a ball, throwing a ball or just generally moving at speed.
We took a fleeting visit to Clarks to get him measured properly and get the 5 year old some new school shoes. I pointed out some really nice Clarks trainers and was mocked (by The Husband) and told that he would be wearing ‘proper’ trainers for football.
Next stop the sports shop. A pair of white (me with a ‘they’ll be ruined in a fortnight’ face) trainers later and The Husband beaming we went home.
The trainers went on as soon as we got home.
They remained on until bedtime when they were put back in their box and taken to bed with him.
Three weeks later and The Husband is swelling with pride.
Not only is the 4 year old left footed but he scores more goals than anyone else.
And me? I need to put my ‘they’ll be ruined in a fortnight’ face back in my handbag. The trainers are still immaculate and white.

That’s warmed my cockles……..
xx
Ahh… how wonderful! I remember I used to take all sorts of things to bed with me – there’s a photo of me as a kid asleep in bed with a free sports bag given by my kids savings account bank!
Oh, this is just like Marty McFly – he used to sleep with his footy boots on. The four year old sleeping with his trainer box is melting my heart. x
Bless, bless, bless.
I so miss Clarke’s at the moment. Took my 6 year old for new (expensive) shoes on Saturday and he came back from school yesterday saying “I have GOT to get these things off”. They are far too narrow. There doesn’t seem to be the UK measuring system here – measuring both the length and the width across the arch. He looks like he has skinny feet but his high arch means he should have a wider shoe. Heck, they don’t even make the shoes in different widths here. Pah!
This is adorable! I smiled at your description of needing to work your boy like a dog – Kai is more and more the same now he’s really sure on his feet. He can usually be found sat by the door holding his shoes looking hopeful at the moment, like a dog with his lead.
Sounds like you’ve got a little star in the making there. I bet his dad is chuffed to bits.
Us blokes live by the phrase ‘even a broken clock is right twice a day’. Long may they stay white.
Love the photo – how sweet is that!
My son has never been sporty, always last to be picked for teams, no use at football or rugby. But now, at 14 and having shot up to 5’9, he has started playing my hubby’s sport, volleyball. And he’s GOOD AT IT!! Husband is so proud!
I knew he’d be good. He’s just like #2 – it wasn’t until we moved from home-based stuff onto football and he got obsessed with that, that our A&E visits finally tailed off.
My two do football on a sat morning. Maxi has now graduated to Sat Club, so mini has started Tots!
It is great fun and lots of excercise, Maxi has to have propper boots with shin pads and the likes, but picked his own kit – get this plain blue from Sports and soccer £3!!
But por old mini has feet that are too wide for real trainers so had to cope with clarks – not a happy bunny. The only way we could cheer him up was to but flasing ones.
Oh, and boys are like dogs – lots of excercise, food and prasie!
aawww – he looks so cute!! I’ve caught my kids sleeping with new purchases/favourite items loads of times – it’s lovely
And it’s great that he’s enjoying his sporty stuff… and if the trainers get dirty just chuck them in the washing machines and dry them upside down on a radiator or windowsill. Maybe stuff the toes with a bit of newspaper
Top Tip For The Day
How sweet is that picture of him sleeping with the trainers!
My Mr is so hoping one of the girls is sporty
That is too cute! My son is in love with his trainers, too. Shame he doesn’t really know how to kick a ball in a straight line…
Aww he looks so cute. My 3yo goes to soccer tots with his dad on a Saturday morning. He enjoys it now but not sure he will be into football for years to come, he likes pink, dancing and wants to be a hairdresser. Bless.. Lucky daddy has another little boy he can hopefully enjoy kicking a ball with. Great post and long may it continue. xx
Do you have “Mr. Clean Magic Erasers” over there? They work especially well on white leather.
He even looks like he is dreaming of training, in his sleep. Very cute.
awww, how cute sleeping with the box. I am very impressed at his ability to keep them so white!
I have my suspicions that The Husband, to prove a point, gets up when I’m asleep and cleans them.
That’s actually pretty close to the truth.
Looks like you have a future sports star on your hands!
I’d've been pulling that same face I reckon. Hate it when we’re proved wrong LOL!
I am well narked about the whiteness of those trainers. They sparkle at me each and every morning from the shoe rack.
I’m sure they won’t stay white for very long
