Strike me down and call me Geoffrey

Written by on February 2, 2011 in BLOG - 30 Comments

This post is for Tara Lara’s Gallery. The theme this week for the picture is ‘Shapes’. What? The bowl is a circle and the bread is a rectangle. What’s your problem?

On Monday I made Nigella’s pea and pesto soup.  As usual I cheated. I ignored Nigella’s waffle about a ‘small Flameware Marmitout’ and used a ‘pan’. I also sieved the soup at the end because I don’t like the texture of the pea shell/coats/skins … call them what you will.  And another thing … I used pesto from a jar.  Strike me down and call me Geoffrey.

It was delicious.  I can imagine that it would have been even tastier had I used fresh pesto, but time was not on my side.  Start to finish this soup took me 15 minutes.

Thank you to Moor Mummy for bringing this soup to my attention.  Although you failed to mention how windy the Driver household would be post-soup!

Oh, and if anyone can enlighten me about what a small Flameware Marmitout is I would be most grateful.

Works for me! Looks delish too, er, Geoffrey. I won’t strike you down, though, if you don’t mind… ;)

I actually think finding shapes in everyday things is perfect! Not that a Nigella recipe is an everyday thing. Well the cooking implement she mentioned is certainly not. Nope, sorry can’t enlighten you!

That cooking implement, I have now found out, is a rather expensive cooking implement from her range that she’s trying to flog. Pah!

My pleasure, let me know if you make it and whether you survive without a marmitout!

Marmitout ShMarmitout… £47?! and that’s only for the small one…

£47??? That’s a scandal. Surely you’d only need a big one if you were running a soup kitchen … and a bit poncy?

I made minted pea and spinach soup last week. It was gorgeous but I have been banned from ever making it again due to the wind effect.

That sounds nice … I have to say the gale force wind was actually worth it. It was good soup!

Ah so Nigella is flogging her wares I see with the Marmitout. It’s like Jamie and his shaker thing – what was wrong with a rinsed out jam jar?

    • Laura - AWNTYM? February 2, 2011 at 1:21 pm · Reply

Oh *hangs head in shame*, I bought the Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker for The Husband a few years ago. It’s been used twice I think. I feel like I’ve been had. Why didn’t I get him a jam jar?

oh we have masses of Marmitouts in our house; flamewear, silverwear, porridgewear, hatwear…you name it, we’ve got it. I hear there’s a new pestowear marmitout soon to be available too, which could be helpful for this soup.

Hooray for Mrs Dodo. Do you have any jellywear Marmitouts? If not, you must immediately source some for your shop. All the rage I hear.

Totally agree on the wiffle waffle sentiment.
It makes cooking seem scary when it REALLY isn’t…I think its all a big plan tho. After all if everybody knew how easy it was really, maybe we wouldn’t all feel the need to spend £140 quid on a hand blender (*cough*… Gordan Ramsey..it can “emulsify” apparently; -)) or a tenner on a *pancake spatula* (is that really nessesary? Jamie Oliver) Sorry..mini rantage, Just saying :)
Oh and the soup looks fab, never made pea soup… i am now inspired to do so X

If you took out the wiffle waffle it’s only about three steps! Let me know how your pea soup goes!

I have no idea what that is. You are doing very well with your cooking lol

The ratio of edible vs burnt seems to be getting better!

Flameware Marmitout sounds like a small South American animal. Food and shapes what’s not to like.
I wonder if the soup makes Nigella windy? I like the idea of her trumping in her silk dressing gown and she creeps about a night chewing on a ham hock or other sides of meat as she alleges in her programme.

    • Laura - AWNTYM? February 2, 2011 at 10:26 am · Reply

They don’t show that in the programme do they? *Nigella enters kitchen stage left. Approaches large fridge wearing silk dressing gown. Looks at camera, licks lips, rubs thighs and gives a cheeky wink. opens fridge door, scoops up chocolate cake in hand and shovels into mouth seductively, PAAAAAAAARP. Farts and shuts fridge door*

To be honest, it was either that or a round stained glass window. The stained glass window was a bit dirty and I didn’t want you casting aspersions about my cleaning.

i too like to ‘free form’ when it comes to recipes! means we are creative and can think on our feet. perhaps.

    • Laura - AWNTYM? February 2, 2011 at 9:55 am · Reply

It doesn’t usually work like that. I tend to burn things. But with Nigella I think you have to trip back the wiffle waffle.

That sounds delicious! Will definitely add that to my things to try list!

Bet she only mentioned the cause she has one in her kitchen range . . . http://www.nigella.com/kitchen-kit/flameware/flameware-marmitout
