Scaring the crows in the village …

Written by on September 15, 2010 in BLOG - 16 Comments

This is my entry for Tara’s Gallery this week.  The theme is ‘Celebration’. I am loosely claiming the following as a community celebration!

Every year the village hosts a Scarecrow Walk … each shop, church and social group makes their own scarecrow and you have to wander the entire village to see them all.

I’ve lived here for four years and this weekend was the first time we took part.  There were 171 scarecrows positioned around the village.  Each had a number and you had to tick them off and at the end you got entered into a prize draw.  The children were very enthusiastic and ran ahead all the way round.

I’m so glad I went, the amount of effort that went into some of the ‘exhibits’ was amazing.  My favourite had to be Wallace & Grommit, Curse of the Warerabbit, on the C of E church graveyard.  Closely followed by Elvis at The Methodist Church (check out his eyelashes!)

… and I did miss last year’s scarecrow walk, but will never forget driving past the C of E Church and seeing Michael Jackson rise from the dead.  It was a classic.

171 that’s fantastic! A village near us did one in the summer and perhaps there were 30 or so. My boys loved it! Everyone did their scarecrow according to their profession or hobby. Brilliant. We especially enjoyed the surgeon who had a ‘body’ on the operating table (old ironing board) with blood everywhere….hmmm…

Yikes! I thought for minute that you lived in the next village to me, it never occured to me that this was something that might happen in other villages too! Yours looks much more ‘pop cultute’ than round here. Tbh I find them quite sinister, especially when you catch a glimpse of them as you drive past and they look like real, lifeless people. I am weird, though.

A village near us does this too and it really takes you by surprise the first time you see a motorcyclist head first in a hedge, or Postman Pat outside the post office…

A village near us (ie near you too) does this too. Some great creativity going on there. Someone did a brilliant Darth Vader last year, complete with glowing light sabre.

Fantastic pics! Is that Beetlejuice in there?

That sounds like loads of fun even if I do find scarecrows a bit creepy. Did you win?

They are amazing. What a brilliant thing to do. You must enjoy it every year – wish you had another Michael Jackson to take a picture of – was it in the graveyard with a Thriller outfit on?

I have heard loads about these scarecrow walks, then keep forgetting about them. This looks like great fun. I’m going to have to see if there are anymore happening soon so that we can take Amy.
    I love the spongebob :)
