On Friday myself and Teacher Friend Mother of 3 went on an all day jolly.
We visited Shibden Hall Park in Halifax where we rowed boats, played, had a picnic and collected sticks.
We also rode on a miniature railway which had THE grumpiest looking driver I think I may have seen in my 6 year relationship with children’s miniature trains.
His face didn’t change once, even when he waved goodbye to the children.
Slightly more alarming were the family pictured sitting at the picnic bench just to the left of Mr Grumpy. They had brought an elderly relative with them in a wheelchair. The train did five minute circuits round part of the park. Every time it arrived the family would leap up and tie their yapping dog to the wheelchair bound man and get on the train.

I don’t know what’s funnier the drivers face or the yapping dog family
twiggy x
PS didn’t realise Shibden Hall had a little train, better add that to the list then !!!
Haven’t been here for a while, but if you keep posting pictures of lookers like that I’ll be here everyday.
I actually kind of fell in love with this guy. I swear he has been around since steam trains started puffing. Maybe he just needs a little love?
I feel for him. I couldn’t bear to drive round children all day. I love my own child but I can’t love everybody elses.
I have started to invent all kinds of stories for why this guy is so grumpy. Josie @ Sleep is for the weak should definitely use him as a writing prompt one week!
love it! he looks almost unreal!
I showed this to my husband who is a Virgin train driver, and told him he’s got a rival in the misery stakes!
After seeing that face he probably feels better about his own grumpy face (that is if he has a grumpy face of course!)
He is even more grumpy than some of the bus drivers I have encountered!
I saw the sign for Shibden Hall Park I think, when we went to Eureka. I would have popped in if we’d had time, I am very easily lured into parks!
Next time you pass you’ll feel compelled to go and see if his royal grumpness is there!
He has the look of a man who possibly dislikes his job somewhat. But then I’m not sure what’s on the next rung of the miniature train driver career ladder. His is face made me laugh out loud so thanks for this post!
I do wonder if he’s just a contented grump
Not been to Shibden Park in a while but may have to go just to check out Mr Jowly Face.
I would be interested to know if that is just the way his face falls every day or whether it was a one off!
I’ve been on that train, in fact on friday I very nearly went to that park with the kids myself (we went to Ikea in the end in order to jump on the beds)
We were in Ikea on Friday Dan!
If only I’d known we could have all jumped on the beds together …
I’m not sure if that sounds wrong or not.
Maybe they were just trying to cheer up the driver. Or maybe they are the reason he was so grumpy …
Maybe he doesn’t like yappy dogs!
:] You should be hired by Shibden Hall to do their PR, I can’t wait to take DD there to see the old misery in the flesh.
I think you should report back on the grumpy buggers face too!
His face appears to be suffering from a serious case of gravity.
Or yes, miserable bugger.
…damn near genius family with the yapping dog though, wonder if they would write a book…
They didn’t look the type to read a book let alone write one. You could be their ghost writer. No?
OMG, was he ‘trying’ to look grumpy? Driving a miniature train is surely a pretty cushy job, no? Can’t imagine there are many delays or suicides.
Maybe it’s the monotony? Round and round.
I think you can safely drop the ‘probably’ tag.
I think you’re right!
