Have you ever sniffed a new pencil?

Maybe you’ve stroked a notebook lovingly?

Taken great joy in sharpening a whole pencil case full of pencil crayons?

No?

I have always had ‘a thing’ for stationery. As a child, at the start of each new term, I remember my Dad taking me to town where I would buy a new pencil case and furnish it with brand new writing implements, rubbers and rulers. Each item perfect and ready to be used … so shiny and full of potential.

On holiday I would hanker after visiting a foreign stationery shop. Pristine and clinical with the most beautifully designed stationery I would always come home with something special.  One trip in particular that sticks out is to Granada, in Spain, where I bought a see through fountain pen. One Christmas I came downstairs to find a brand new desk with a lift up lid.  I spent hours putting all my stationery in it and moving it around … and moving it all around again.

Clearly I have passed this love of all things stationery-like on to my daughter who turned 7 two weeks ago.  She requested that her Auntie take her to a stationery shop to spend her birthday money. She came back with a notebook, pencil case and pencil.  I was so proud.

So why am I wittering about my stationery obsession?  Well, last month we were sent some stationery from Tinc. I was transported back to the heady start of term and that shop in Granada. The children split the goods between them whilst I looked on, enviously, wishing I was 5 or 7 again and in need of a new bendy ruler or a rubber you can tie a knot in.

Tinc stationery comes in 5 colours; pink, black, blue, green and white. It’s really well priced, the cheapest item being 75p.  I was really impressed with the quality too.  They also do party bags which I think is a great idea for something a bit different.

All I need to do now is make sure the 7 year old understands the importance of sniffing a new pencil.

I love to buy and collect stationary since I was a little kid. At that time I bought multi color pen, pencils with cartoon characters at the back end. Now I just collect fountain pens.

I feel like a kid in a sweet shop when I go to the stationery cupboard at work.

Actually sister dearest the politically correct term is erasers – see comment by Scope for why. I prefer rubbers myself

Yes, I have the sense of humor of a 13 year old boy.

Now excuse me why I go take a picture up Marilyn Monroe’s skirt. Hey a twenty five foot tall woman shouldn’t wear that dress in the windy city!

You’re killing the Americans with these two:

“rubbers… Each item perfect and ready to be used … so shiny and full of potential.”

“a rubber you can tie a knot in”

Two countries separated by a common language, indeed. This is so the laugh I needed.

I’d be more worried that my youngest would just stuff it up his nose, not the brightest spark I’m afraid

I do love stationery. Nothing quite like a new pen to lift the spirits. I used to love the smell of the stationery cupboard at primary school, also the smell of the woodwork room at secondary school and new books. I’m not sure that’s entirely relevant
