I love toffee, creamy, chewy, shiny, moreish yumma-yummaha-ness*. Every year Teacher Friend Mother of Three’s Mum makes a big batch for various social events. Every year I forget to ask her for the recipe. This year I got it though, and I didn’t have to bribe her.
Last night The Husband made it with the children. The only problem encountered was the children constantly asking “Has it set yet?” … and then the small problem of trying not to eat it ALL immediately.
Oh, and then there was the, rather crucial, bit where The Husband ignored the ‘sandwich tin’ instruction and put it in a Denby dish. Still, lots of hacking with a cake slice and a knife later, he got out.
Dorothy’s Toffee
170g butter
225g golden syrup
225g sugar
1 tube of condensed milk (170g)
Heat ingredients together and boil, stirring all the time until ‘toffee coloured’. Test the set by dropping some mixture into a bowl of water. Pour into a greased sandwich tin and leave to set.
* Yes, I made up a word ‘yumma-yummaha-ness’ … coming to an Oxford Dictionary near you soon no doubt.
