As one door slams shut …

Written by on June 17, 2009 in BLOG, FAMILY, The Drivers - 19 Comments

When we move we will have Virgin on Demand (I type that sentence with a look of contempt on my face). We will wave goodbye to Sky+ and I will shed a tear and have a period of mourning. It has become a part of the family, like a cuddly old Granny in the corner that keeps you up to date with all the ‘goings on’. She smells of sugar puffs, says “bugger” every so often and gives you sweets before your tea as long as you don’t tell. I think of Sky+ and have a warm fuzzy feeling. I’m sad to see her go.

We ordered the almost 5 year old’s birthday present yesterday, a trampoline. In the notes section of checkout I asked for it to be delivered to our new house the day after we move in, which is a few days before her birthday. The company took no notice of my request, which I also emailed to them and tried to deliver the MASSIVE box to the new, empty house today, 10 days early. The pillocks. I got a call at work and had to direct them to the house we are in now where the husband was not best pleased and might have sworn a bit delighted to have to clear a space in our overflowing garage. He had to do a run to the tip to make room, which meant he had to text me to ask if it was OK to get rid of the pushchair, which we fondly refer to as Geoff which isn’t at all strange. I said of course we could, we hadn’t used it in over 18 months and it has a faulty brake. I then spent all afternoon feeling great sadness. A sense of loss of everything baby that we once had.

So,  I shall grieve for Geoff too.

RIP Sky+ and Geoff.

Of course as one door shuts another opens so I am still excited to the point of exhaustion at the prospect of a dishwasher for the first time in three years.

Then there’s the dog – When we moved to this house we had to tell a multicoloured whopper white lie that we had no pets. We have a huge lolloping seven year old chocolate Labrador, called Peanut.  I like to tell people that the teenager named her but in fact it was all my doing.  My Dad is so embarrassed when he walks her he refuses to shout her name.  Although she moults 364 days a year she’s a good dog and well trained. Our landlady never visits so we’ve been fine. This is probably the moment that I find out that somehow my landlady reads the blog and we get evicted 10 days before we move.

Anyway, we thought she’d have to be banished when we moved into the new house, it’s another rental but the owners are more involved and have known the neighbours for 12 years. We had arranged for her to go on a holiday to Auntie K’s, for a year, but as the date has got closer we have all started to get upset about the dog’s extended holiday even though she licks her own arse and her breath stinks. The husband has spoken to the landlord who has said that she can come too, adding that ‘She’d better be careful on the tiled floor, it’s a bit slippy, wouldn’t want her to hurt her hips’.

Hooray for the kind landlord. and his dishwasher.

Of course Sky+ never lost it’s appeal.  I can only imagine that filling and emptying a dishwasher will.

You’re getting a dishwasher?! I would LOVE one!! Sadly our kitchen is too tiny. Hope you enjoy the new house :)

I am very jelous about your dishwasher….i still don’t have one, but i’m not gonna moan about it as last time i moaned about not having enough hours in the day to do laundry, my dearest hubby kindly bought me a TUMBLE DRYER for mothers day – arsehole!
    Love the dogs name :)

I think Virgin on demand is pretty much the same as Sky anyway – you just have to get used to the new buttons. I don’t know what I’m going to do in the new house when I’ll probably be back to 4 channels and a fuzzy Channel 5.

Great news about Peanut. But yes, must be careful on those floors ;)

I haven’t had Sky+ for 3 years, but I still think of it fondly. Like Littlemummy we have a (Humax) freeview box that is similar to Sky+, but without Sky channels. Perhaps it’s just Lost and 24 that I miss.
Just think of the money you’ll save!

We have a freeview box that does the redcording and rewinding thing, might be an option?

We don’t have a dishwasher and I miss it everyday. I don’t have sky and (sounding remarkably like single parent dad who in turn sounds remarkably like my own dad) wouldn’t want to support the murdoch cricket stealing (i can go on but it isn’t printable) device.

Also, hooray for the landlord. Did you rent through an estate agent. I only ask because we said we were fine to have pets in our house when we rented it out, but they advertised it as no pets because that is standard. So, note to all you pet owning tenants out there, it is always worth an ask…

Glad I finally found you again. Off to change all my links so I don’t lose you again!

I miss Sky. We had it when we lived in Germany. Some of our neighbors had it here, but it was because they brought the receiver and card with them (I’m not sure how they continued to get it for 6 years, perhaps someone in England was paying their bill? I never asked too many questions.)

Oh. You’re talking television services. I thought “Virgin On Demand” was something different. The “Virgin Bride” store I saw in London once confused me, too. Probably a popular place for wedding pictures to be taken.

Yay, a landlord more worried about the dog than his floor – my kind of man. Don’t understand the Virgin/Sky thing – I’ve only just got a freeview box so am still excited about being able to see Grand Designs at last…….

Just imagine being able to record Kevin McCloud without you having to do anything and watch it at your convenience. imagine you need a wee and it’s not the adverts … simply pause Kevin mid gesticulation. It’s bliss.

The only way I’m getting a dishwasher is if we turn the back of the garage into a utility room and in order to do that hubby will have to get rid of the Triumph road bike hanging from the ceiling that hasn’t been ridden in about 4 1/2 years. I’d really like to have a dishwasher. :(

Hurray! I love your landlord already!!!! And yay for the dishwasher – I can’t live without mine now although I’m obsessive about knives not pointing upwards after I read that a child had been killed after he fell on the open dishwasher and impaled himself…

Boo for the Sky Plus though. I love mine as I get to watch Bones and rewind the nice bits (where Booth is in the bath) in private.

Oh god … impaling children. Am now going to have an anxiety dream about the dishwasher and knives. Will forever point knives down.

Also, my name is Victoria, not Looking Good. Not sure what happened there…

Aha, have finally worked out that I was subscribing to your old blog. Duh. I feel for you about both the Sky+ and the buggy. I feel really strange whenever I get rid of baby stuff. As for Sky+, not sure I could live without it. But I’m sure virgin is ok too.

Glad you found me! The Virgin package we have just has playback which means I actually have to think about what’s on and when … I haven’t had to do that for 5 years

Give me a dishwasher over the Murdoch footballer paying device any day. Have been sky free for over 2 years now, feel so much better for it ;-)
